"A Pedestrian-Friendly City"

What?

Barcelona is the first pedestrian-friendly city worldwide! Since this May (2016).

But what includes this exactly? The city has installed a network of new superblocks in its downtown. This returns road space to pedestrians and makes the city more pedestrian-friendly. Furthermore helps it to combat some of the urban pollution caused by cars. The superblocks are made of former roadways that have been transformed into a series interconnected city squares. In these new areas have Pedestrians (and cyclists) priority, while drivers have to slow their speeds.

The final goal is to eliminate traffic in the city with 60 percent in the coming years.

"The superblocks are intended to put an end to the predominance of the car in the streets, taking away road space and returning it to pedestrians." – said by a representative from the city's environmental agency.

This new design of the city benefits the residents and the environment.

It demonstrates a unique solution to a series of pressing urban issues.

Why?

This new design of a pedestrian-friendly city is made for active people who love to be outside and care about safety and the environment. Furthermore feel these people the need of being sustainable, being structured and having physical exercise.

The fact that this is the first pedestrian-friendly city makes it very unique.

The design of this pedestrian-friendly city is very present and funny. It supports people to walk and makes walking more fun! And at least has it a positive impact on the environment. I think that these aspects are the reasons why this signal is attractive / inspiring. The megatrends of sustainability and increasing physical exercising are also making this signal more attractive and inspiring. I predict that this design of a pedestrian-friendly city which makes the city more artistic, safe and sustainable will be a great success! A lot of other cities al over the world will follow. Cities will become more sustainable and people will never see walking in the same way they saw it!

*This signal has connections with Human Movement and Sustainable cities.

Because it supports people (in a funny / artistic way) to walk. If more people walk less people drive cars, the pollution caused by exhaust gases will decrease.

Furthermore is the final goal: “eliminate traffic in the city with 60 percent.”

This will make the city more sustainable and has a positive effect on the environment.
