What?
India is one of the biggest countries of the world with one of the biggest populations, 1 billion people. All these people together create a mass of garbage, especially when it comes to plastic. To counter all this garbage and improve the environment a researcher from Hyderabad, Narayana Peesapaty has done a great invention. The edible spoon. This spoon is rock hard, in boiled water it stays in shape for 20 minutes. It’s made of millet, rice and wheat flour. And comes in many different flavors: sugar, ginger-cinnamon, ginger-garlic, cumin, celery, black pepper, mint-ginger and carrot-red beet. At last it has a shelf life of 2-3 years. So after you have finished your meal you can eat your nutritious spoon.
And even if you decide to not eat your spoon, you can always throw it away without any sense of guilt. The edible spoon decomposes within 4-5 days.
That’s much faster then a plastic spoon, which decomposes in decades.
Since March this year you can support the environment of India by buying the edible spoon online, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1240116767/edible-cutlery-the-future-of-eco-friendly-utensils?ref=project_share
Why?
In first instance this spoon is made for “poor” people in India, they have a survival mentality and feel the need to feed themselves. But there are more people who can and will buy this spoon. Like “rich” people in the west, they’re accommodating and helpful. further they have a strong need to feel useful, doing good for other people / the environment / the world. The fact that you can do something good for others by buying something for yourself gives you a useful and good feeling. This makes it attractive to buy the edible spoon. The megatrends of “sustainability” and “innovation” are making this extra inspiring. I predict a bright future for this product. I honestly see only positive sides of the product, it’s good for the environment, health and it gives you a good feeling. It think that this product will change a lot in India, at first of course less garbage and less famine. Maybe there’ll follow similar products like nutritious edible cups.
Open world
The edible spoon gives the rest of the world the change to help India with their environment and (nutritious) food shortage problems. It (India) opens themselves for the rest of the world, certain problems / situations become more transparent for us.
